EDF, the historical electricity supplier
EDF, formerly Électricité de France, is a French multinational electricity utility company, largely owned by the French state. EDF is the historical electricity supplier and the main energy supplier in France.
The company offers both regulated tariffs and market-priced deals. EDF also offers green electricity and self-consumption solutions.
EDF's regulated tariff offers are known as "Tarif Bleu" and are regulated by the public authorities. Consumers can choose between several tariff options:
- The Base option: the price of electricity is the same whatever the time of day ;
- Off-peak option: the price of electricity is lower for 8 hours a day, usually at night ;
- Tempo option: six electricity prices are available. Customers are notified of the rate change the day before;
- The EJP option (no longer available for subscription): two electricity prices are available. Customers are notified of the rate change the day before ;
In addition to its regulated tariff offers, EDF also markets market-price offers, the prices of which are set freely by the supplier. These offers are generally more expensive than the regulated tariff offers, depending on consumption profiles.
EDF also offers green energy deals, which guarantee electricity generated from renewable sources.

Foreign electricity suppliers conquering the French market
Several foreign suppliers have entered the French electricity supply market :
- Vattenfall is a supplier and producer owned by the Swedish government. Vattenfall set up in France in 2018 ;
- Wekiwi is an Italian energy supplier that started its development in France in June 2018 ;
- Octopus Energy is a group committed to the British energy transition. The Octopus group bought Plüm Energie in February 2022 to make it its French branch. Plüm Energie became Octopus Energy France.
French small green suppliers
Some alternative electricity suppliers also stand out for their commitment to the energy transition, through the supply of standard or premium electricity offers.
These include:
- Ekwateur, a supplier that offers electricity, gas and renewable wood. It is France's leading supplier of renewable energy, and is the supplier to all French ministries. Ekwateur offers 100% premium green electricity and a 100% Biomethane offer. Ekwateur is also the only electricity supplier to have set up in territories governed by ELDs ;
- ilek is a green supplier based in Toulouse. It is one of the greenest suppliers according to Greenpeace. ilek only sells premium green electricity. Its "Mon producteur local d'électricité verte" (My local green electricity producer) offer has been awarded the Very Committed level by ADEME's VertVolt label. For gas, it offers 100% Biomethane gas. ilek has been awarded the Selectra prize for the best green supplier in 2019 and 2020 ;
- Enercoop is a green electricity supplier that grew out of a Greenpeace initiative to create an ideal alternative model for the supply of renewable energy. Enercoop offers prices that are deliberately higher than the regulated sales tariff, and is aimed at consumers who are prepared to pay the true price of renewable energy while ensuring that producers are properly remunerated. Enercoop has the status of a cooperative company of collective interest: customers can become shareholders of the company and members of the Enercoop network and thus participate in its governance ;
- Mint Energie is a green electricity supplier with the distinctive feature of being both low-cost (cheaper than the regulated tariff) and offering green electricity. The supplier is rated "on track" in the Greenpeace ranking of green suppliers. Mint Energie was awarded the Selectra Prize for the best electricity supplier in 2020 and 2021 ;
- Elmy is a green supplier created by the former director of Planète OUI. Elmy offers premium green electricity that is 100% local.

Subsidiaries of historical energy suppliers and LDCs
The historical energy suppliers, EDF and ENGIE, both market electricity offers via their subsidiaries.
Happ-e by Engie
Happ-e by ENGIE is an ENGIE subsidiary originally designed to be the brand under which ENGIE offers attractive prices. This subsidiary was created to attract price-conscious consumers who use energy comparators. But Happ-e no longer offers a discount on EDF's regulated sales tariff.
Sowee by EDF
Sowee is an EDF subsidiary that has been offering electricity and gas deals since 2017. EDF created Sowee with the aim of bringing technological added value to its customers. The Sowee Contrat Elec electricity package stands out for its optional connected station, which can be purchased (€299) or rented (from €5.99 per month) to take advantage of a range of features to help you keep your energy consumption under control: temperature control, radiator programming, remote control of heating and lighting, alerts in the event of over-consumption, etc. However, this offer comes at a high price.
Electricity suppliers disappeared or were bought out
In 2022 occurred an unprecedented crisis in the energy market. As a result, many electricity suppliers have had to stop their supplying activity after being forced to drastically increase their prices.
These include :
- E.Leclerc Energies, which has announced that it will cease trading as an electricity supplier from 31 March 2022 ;
- Bulb has ceased trading. All customers have been redirected to EDF ;
- Barry Energy has definitively suspended its energy supply activities in France.
Other alternative electricity suppliers have been taken over by competing suppliers:
- Cdiscount Energie and Greenyellow were taken over by Elmy ;
- The French branch of OVO Energie was bought by Eni and became Eni Gas & Power France ;
- Plüm Energie was acquired by the Octopus group to become Octopus Energy France ;
- Planète Oui was acquired by Mint Energie.

I want the best customer service
Several criteria can define good customer service at a supplier: waiting time, number of disputes, customer reviews, rewards obtained, etc.
In view of customer feedback and awards obtained by TotalEnergies over more than 11 consecutive years, it remains the preferred energy supplier for quality of service. It is a safe bet and it guarantees support with an annual meeting to take stock of its invoices. It is important to note that TotalEnergies will not be able to provide you with assistance in English once you become their client. Keep this in mind if you don't feel comfortable with speaking French yet !
Another good indicator for the quality of a customer service is the rate of disputes communicated each year by the national energy mediator.
According to the national energy mediator, the energy suppliers with the lowest rate of disputes are :
- EDF with 42 disputes per 100,000 contracts ;
- ilek with 50 disputes per 100,000 contracts ;
- Engie with 63 disputes per 100,000 contracts.
Here is the ranking of energy suppliers according to their dispute rate

I want the English-speaking customer service
Need to speak with an English-speaking energy advisor? Aside from the historical provider EDF’s English-speaking helpline, there are a number of green providers in France that offer customer support in English ! - either online (through email, webchat, and social media channels) or over the phone:
Energy supplier | English support available | More information |

I want the greenest supplier
More and more suppliers are launching their green energy offers, however not all are created equal. In fact, some suppliers offer electricity from renewable sources but continue to produce fossil fuels in parallel. To better inform consumers, Greenpeace has produced a ranking of the greenest electricity suppliers. In the lead:
- Enercoop: Sources 100% renewable energy and supports small independent producers.
- Urban Solar Energy: a small supplier that supports collective self-consumption from photovoltaic installations (solar panels), and sources 100% renewable energy.
- Ilek: the supplier sources from wind, solar and hydraulic electricity producers maintaining a 100% green energy offering for clients who can also choose their production site.
